The Madison, Wisconsin, community is mourning the unexpected loss of Michael Johnson, the longtime president and CEO of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Dane County, who passed away at the age of 50. His death was confirmed by a spokesperson for the organization on Monday, prompting an outpouring of grief from colleagues, community leaders, and those whose lives were touched by his work.
Johnson was widely recognized for his unwavering commitment to empowering young people throughout Dane County. Since assuming leadership of the organization in 2010, he oversaw a period of remarkable growth and transformation, expanding programs and strengthening the Club’s impact on local youth and families.
Although he briefly stepped away in 2018 to serve as chief executive officer of United Way of Cincinnati, Johnson later returned to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Dane County. His leadership proved especially significant during the COVID-19 pandemic, when he helped guide the organization through unprecedented challenges while ensuring continued support for the children and communities it served.
In a statement following his passing, organization spokesperson Ginny Rico acknowledged the tremendous loss while affirming the Club’s commitment to continuing the mission Johnson championed.
“While we mourn this loss, our organization remains strong, focused, and committed to continuing the important work Michael helped lead,” Rico said, adding that leadership and the Board have plans in place to maintain stability during the transition.
The organization also announced that former Chief Education and People Officer Taylor Jackson will serve as interim president and CEO as it moves forward.
Johnson’s influence extended well beyond the organization itself. Throughout the Madison area, he became known as a passionate advocate for youth development, education, and community engagement. His dedication earned him widespread respect from civic leaders and residents alike.
